Politically Correct Hate Crimes By: David Horowitz
FrontPageMagazine.com | Wednesday, January 17, 2001

I HAVE AN APOLOGY to make. “Politically Incorrect Crimes” - which was the previous designation for this important feature of our site is really the wrong designation. “Politically Correct Hate Crimes” is the appropriate one.

I am responsible for the mis-appellation and all I can say in my behalf is that, in an Alice-In-Wonderland world, it’s sometimes difficult to know what is upside down and what is not. Thus the idea of a politically incorrect crime, as I originally conceived it, was that the victim would be a member of the officially designated oppressor group and the perpetrator from the ranks of the oppressed. That would serve to explain the official silence surrounding the crime itself.

Just as there can be no black racism according to Spike Lee and other sages of our progressive culture, so there can be no black hate crimes. Thus when four Wichita young men and women are tortured and then executed by two blacks during the Christmas season at the height of a national debate about hate crimes, the incident is invisible on the national radar and treated locally by authorities and the media as a routine event and a racially neutral robbery. (Even if victims and perpetrators alike had been of the same race, this crime is so horrific it would have been national news. That is an index of how fiercely the media left protects the myth of racial oppression: if a racist monster is African American, he doesn’t really exist.)

I see now that my original suggestion for labeling these crimes was too subtle by half. They need to be called what they are: Politically Correct Hate Crimes. As I wrote in Hating Whitey and Other Progressive Causes, there is not only a license to hate white people in America today but an academic industry and media culture devoted to inciting such hatred. No other racial or ethnic group in America has the same privilege of being the target of such powerful institutions.

The original title of my book was “Hating White People Is Politically Correct, and Other Progressive Ideas.” That was more to the point. These politically correct ideas about white oppression and white racism have consequences which are before us now, not only in the perpetration of the Wichita horror, and the assassination of the forgotten 8-year-old Kevin Shifflett and others but in the media’s calculated silence, and in the aggressive campaign of the Democratic Party as it promotes the idea, through law and innuendo, that hate crimes can only be committed against politically designated groups with special protected status - blacks, Hispanics, women and gays.

The renaming of this section Politically Correct Hate Crimes necessarily carries the implication that those who promulgate the politically correct idea that white people, males and heterosexuals in America are singular oppressors and that hate crimes can only be committed against specially designated victims in effect will crimes like the Wichita massacre and the killing of little Kevin Shifflett. That is because in the climate of hate created by institutions as influential as the New York and Los Angeles Times, ABC, CNN, Harvard and Yale - such crimes are indeed inevitable.
