A column by Deroy Murdock gives details on the ball bearings Hezbollah packs into the rockets it fires at Israeli civilians. “Hezbollah uses them,” he notes, “to shred Israelis’ flesh and bones.”
Murdock quotes an Israeli photojournalist, Lenny Maschkowski, who says “It’s amazing how far these little ball bearings go. . . . They have a deadly radius of around 600 meters.” After one rocket attack in Haifa, Maschkowski saw ball bearings lodged in a concrete wall about a block away from the blast. “If you are close and get hit by many ball bearings, you end up like a sieve.”
It happened to Alek Vensbaum, an Israeli Train Authority employee who was injured in the deadly attack on Haifa’s main railroad station on July 16. “The fourth boom got me when I was nearly at the door.... I was hit by ball bearing-like pieces of metal in my neck, hand, stomach, and foot.” Eight others died in the attack, possibly related to the ball bearings.
Meanwhile, bloggers keep unmasking more and more Mainstream Media's gaffes in reporting the war. As Yaakov Lappin notes in a summary on ynetnews, a “dead” man in a New York Times photo essay from Tyre is seen walking around and pointing in other photos in the same essay (the Times later issued a correction). US News magazine flaunts a cover photo called “Lebanon’s new ruins” with a Hezbollah man standing in front of a fire—which, it turns out, is a garbage dump.
The same Lebanese woman (Lappin notes in another roundup) seems to be lamenting her destroyed home in AP and Reuters photos taken two weeks apart from each other. In a BBC photo display on the impact of the war, seven pictures out of ten show damage to the Lebanese side and one is ambiguous. Of the two pictures showing Israel, one shows soldiers weeping at a funeral and the other shows a soldier praying while an Israeli artillery piece fires in the background.
And on and on. Note that in every case of media malfeasance uncovered so far, the “errors” and distortions favor the terrorists. There is no known instance of a photo touched up or distorted to make Israel look good and Hezbollah bad. You cannot impress the media mavens with arguments about Israeli moral dilemmas and attempts to avoid civilian casualties, Hezbollah’s use of civilians for cover, or the genocidal aims of Israel’s enemies. The Mainstream Media favors the guys with the ball bearings.
The media are cool people who, if their mindset is comprehensible at all, appear locked in an adolescent mentality of defying the “establishment.” With America involved in the Cold War, they found more and virtue in the likes of Mao, the Viet Cong, and Castro. When communism lost much of its chic, the media latched onto Yasser Arafat and Palestinianism as its new loves.
Today, as the New York Times, Reuters, AP, BBC et al. fall for or collude with every trick of Islamofascist Hezbollah in Lebanon, it appears that the specific ideology of the anti-Western forces is not what matters to these with-it people, but just the fact of being anti-Western. Hezbollah wants a worldwide caliphate where women would be enslaved and homosexuals tortured? No matter; they hate Israel and America, and obligingly supply Third World corpses for the cameras.
Hezbollah fires thousands of rockets designed expressly not just to kill Israeli men, women, and children but to mangle them as painfully and horrifically as possible? No matter; the Mainstream Media rolls right on, enemies of thought, fairness, accuracy, balance, responsibility, and decency, useful idiots—or worse—for genocidal jihad.
